Israelis, a relatively small minority in the mainly Muslim Middle East, tend to have a more matter of fact approach to demographics and ethnic survival. For them, self-perpetuation it isn’t exactly a theoretical issue, but a widely accepted mandate. The alternative would be Muslim rule, and that hasn’t been working out all that well for Christians in the region lately.
This allows us to see feminism in a context where it lacks one of the pillars of its ideology: total female control over fertility. Of course, because Israel is a relatively liberal state, women do have access to abortion and can live like Carrie Bradshaw of Sex and the City if they choose, but they’d be defying convention and likely frowned upon for taking that path, and women are receptive to social pressure. Therefore, as they see it, the situation is far from ideal. You see, in the feminist world, we should all be celebrating abortion, female promiscuity and rejection of family.
Below, the feminist “organizer” explains her grievance. Note the objection:
“The worst part is that they’re using the woman for demographics,” said protest organizer Tzaphira Allison Stern. “Why shouldn’t a woman have an abortion? Because we need the baby so there are more Jews, and so there are more Israeli soldiers, so we can defend the land and continue the occupation.”
It’s kind of funny that she feels angry about the idea of “using the women for demographics.” Actually, I thought nature did that, too. Does it offend her that the human race uses women “for demographics?” Should it use something else such as, say, trees?
She goes on:
Stern stressed that the feminist activists involved in the protest were not pro-abortion. “I don’t get involved [with the decision to abort] because a woman’s ovaries aren’t part of the public sphere,” she said.
The above really shows the difference between an Israeli and Western feminist. A Western feminist would come right out and urge abortion, and in fact they do just that with their abortion ships, one of which caused a riot last year when it docked in a North African port to abort Muslim babies.
However, Ms. Stern knows better than to overplay her hand, so I’ve got to give credit to the Israelis for keeping the feminists in check. If only Americans had the sense to do the same.
