Uma Thurman Mommy Film Tanks in UK

by Welmer on March 29, 2010

Commenter Krauser brought the disastrous opening weekend of “Motherhood,” Uma Thurman’s new film to my attention. The take from the opening weekend was an amusing 88 pounds, or $130. Uma, who is approaching 40, may have lost some of her star power due to age, but the subject matter – single motherhood in Manhattan – probably didn’t help much either. The only film that has ever done worse on its opening weekend was about an illiterate, consumptive and toothless Polish street artist.

In addition to Thurman, the film featured Minnie Driver, Anthony Edwards and an appearance by Jodie Foster (can’t go wrong there!). Women who reviewed the film hated it, one them writing: “It’s a yummy-mummy newspaper column splurged onto celluloid, like baby sick on your best cashmere sweater.” Funny, I have similar feelings about the mommy blogs that have proliferated across the internet in recent years.

Rather than cutting her losses and letting this one go, producer Jana Edelbaum has gone on a rampage, blasting Metrodome, the firm responsible for marketing the film in the UK. Edelbaum also expressed unease about having to tell writer and director Katherine Dieckmann how poorly her film had performed. Edelbaum’s fury is but impotent rage at this point, as the performance of the film has become a joke across the land.

It is quite possible that Thurman, Dieckmann and Edelbaum’s collaboration has resulted in irreparable damage to the careers of all three.

BTW, if anyone wants to see a truly decent film about parenting in Manhattan, Dustin Hoffman’s Kramer vs. Kramer is worth the time.
