As our feminized education system devalues credentials by pumping out hundreds of thousands of young women with humanities degrees, the glut is taking its toll on the labor market, leading to plummeting wages amongst the literate set. Now, right here in the US, we have our very own Chinese sweatshop content production line run by lolcat internet entrepreneur Ben Huh, who employs college grads at Washington state’s minimum wage of $8.55 per hour.
Huh claims that offering such low wages is how he attracts premium talent, but that’s obviously a load. He’s paying people so little because he can, and he can because there are so many people out there who think of themselves as “writers.”
As I well know, the market for content producers is absolutely saturated. Only a few can stand out of a field of millions, and the rest will be relegated to low-wage jobs. A few experts, such as tech writers and editors can make a decent living, but when you’ve got dozens of people competing for the same job, all else being equal, the one who will take it for the lowest wage will be the one who gets the job.
Huh’s website, icanhascheezburger.com, is based on the lolcat meme he ripped off from 4chan. Sure, the pictures of cats are a bit amusing, but this is one trend that isn’t going to last. He’s got 30 employees producing this junk for peanuts, which is essentially the same model Walmart used to bring us millions of tons of cheap trinkets produced in factories in Canton.
When our colleges are pumping out kids with degrees that qualify them for little more than putting pictures of cats up on the internet, it’s time to take a serious look at what’s gone wrong. Was the feminization of our universities a good idea if this is the result? Does this add any real value to the US economy?
