WP-United Implemented

by Welmer on February 6, 2010

I just bridged phpBB and The Spearhead with WP-United. For now, commenting will require registration (this may change in the next release of WP-United), but otherwise the site will remain the same. Once you register you can comment away as though nothing happened (if you have registered on the forum you are already registered — it’s the same). Furthermore, the articles will automatically be posted to the forum, so from here on out we’ll have a forum dedicated to articles and their comments. This will provide a higher level of interactivity and allow discussion to continue as interest dictates.

This move ought to reduce trolling and thereby raise the quality of comments, as well as allow me to save many hours of time every week by freeing me from the frequent slogs through the spam folder and comments.

It might take a few days to fine-tune the system, but so far it seems to be running pretty well, and I don’t see any major issues.

So…

Carry on, and happy commenting!

Sounds good to me

Just testing – I’m used to standing out in the cold, so it’s simply curiosity from my part.

Is there any way to make it so that the “posts since last visit” counter can be manually updated (ie, a “mark all posts read” functionality)? Currently the only way I can figure out to update this counter is to log out and log back in. Kind of cumbersome.

Additionally, it seems as though the "Recent Comments" column to the left is buggy and I’ve noticed strange behavior relating to cookies, browser-saved passwords and the site updating on my end (while using Chrome). It appears that the forum updates faster than the main web page does; posts will show up on the forums a few minutes before they show up on the main page, making it seem like the system is "eating" your comments, which could lead certain users (like me!) to double posting. (Thankfully I caught it quick enough to delete my double post.) Last but not least, I noticed that there are now two authors by the name of "Welmer" in the author list to the left on the main Spearhead page.

These issues only seem to apply to the two new posts since the move to WP-United, if that information helps.

I’ll use this as an opportunity to make people aware that they can change their avatar here: http://en.gravatar.com/

I just did mine earlier today.

I had some problems viewing my posts on the main page at first, but…

… Logging out and logging in again seemed to fix things.

You’re making it difficult, Welmer. Now people have to be able to comprehend basic web programs to post on The Spearhead. What’re we going to do about all those ignorant, incompetent men that feminists always complain about?

JayHammers February 7, 2010 at 18:25

Sorry for the spam, but I had to log out and log in again for things to work.

edit: It seems as if posts only update on the main page for me IF I log out and log back in.

The first post I made was through the comments on the article directly, but it didn’t show up there – only here in the forums…

Jay, it’s the cache that’s causing that. The comment will show up when the cache refreshes (at longest in 10 minutes). I’ll see what I can do to make it show up immediately, but first I have to figure out how to do that without increasing the server load too much.

JayHammers February 7, 2010 at 18:45

Ah, okay, it seems odd that it wouldn’t at least ensure that your own new posts show up right away. I like to see my handiwork right away, haha.

And this IS a really cool idea.

The new “Logging in” mode is a crotchy, almost chick-like thing to require.

Even lil’ ladies at GirlGame let fly.

That new feature where every comment is automatically sent to my email is really annoying. Can I disable that?

I liked the old system better.
