It never ends, does it?

This is a short one, but really, I cannot make this shit up:

http://www.comicsalliance.com/2009/11/12/stephenie-meyer-comic-book-twilight/

How much can a franchise, especially such a terrible one, be exploited? I’m probably going to regret asking that, but I want to know.

Wow… I don’t really know what people see in this book/serires…
Personally, my sister told me about it but from the moment I heard “gay vampire” (that’s the main character right?) I said “No, just no…”

You have to remember, crap like Twilight appeals to the Western woman on a psychological level. The “gay” vampire that all the girls/women swoon over is handsome borderline pretty, is super powerful and strong, is willing to kill any person/monster for his girl without blinking an eye, is found attractive by all women but only has eyes for the heroine, and is sensitive and extremely rich. This kind of crap which the media doles out and many women internalize just makes it that much harder for them to be content and happy with the men in their lives.

So, basically, this kind of stuff screw us up badly because women get higher expectations of what a man should do/be…
Great -.-

Not only this. The “gay” vampire is the perfect mix between bad boy and nice guy.

The “gay” vampire has an irresistible urge to drink his girl’s blood and therefore kill her. So interacting with him it is a danger and lots of drama (moreso when he has dangerous fights with the enemies of the vampires). This is the ultimate excitement for a girl. Furthermore, he is found attractive for all women, as porkchop says.

And the same time, the “gay” vampire is madly in love with his girl and he does everything to protect her (from the dangers that being a vampire’s girlfriend entails). This is a white knight. Never mind being his boyfriend creates all these dangers.

A dangerous white knight. An exciting beta. A loving alpha. Lots of drama and danger with a handsome guy. The perfect mix for a romantic dream.

This quote from the movie and the book summarizes everything.

About three things I was absolutely positive. First, Edward was a vampire. Second, there was a part of him-and I didn’t know how potent that part might be-that thirsted for my blood. And third, I was unconditionally and irrevocably in love with him. –Bella Swan

The problem isn’t that it _raises_ women’s expectations. It’s that it creates expectations based in fantasy that no man is able to fulfill.

Yes, sot. I remember an interview to the author in Newsweek (http://www.newsweek.com/id/148993).

Newsweek: Edward is so perfect—you’ve ruined regular men for a lot of teens. Do you feel bad?
Stephanie Meyer: Oh, a little bit, I guess. I just wanted to write for myself, a fantasy. And that’s what Edward is. But it could be a good thing, too. There’s nothing wrong with having high expectations, right?

I could add a lot of comments but I think they are not necessary.

Sounds like what porn does to men regarding real life women.

The funny part is that after shit like this, women ask why they become cougars. If that comic book would have limited to “First Ladies through History” it wouldn’t have been submited to the mockery of the Internet (much), but we use what we have.

Gx1080 November 14, 2009 at 10:47

@DADT

Touche. So it is pornography for women. It explains so much.

As an avid reader, I agree with Stephen King:

…Stephenie Meyer can’t write worth a darn. She’s not very good.”

My wife loved the Twilight movie.. much to my chagrin. Normally she shies away from silly girl orientated movies / literature.

I note in the “Female Force” series you have three women who are wives or daughters of powerful men: Michelle Obama, Hillary Clinton (wives) and Caroline Kennedy (daughter). Only one rose on her own merits (Rice). Not that I care for Rice either.

But you can see how women HATE meritocratic rise and LOVE aristocracy and hereditary positions. It is why they love Obama bowing to say, the Emperor Japan. It is very prince-princess royalty driven, and just is catnip for most women.

Yeah this creates the equivalent of porn fantasies for men for women. But then “Twilight” is just porn for women and girls.

It’s all part of the women’s emotional pornography industrial complex.

Unrealistic emotional expectations….

It should be noted that there is a lot of venom and bile towards the Twilight series from feminists and liberals, perhaps because there’s just something old fashioned about the relationship dynamics which Meyer portrays. Bella is weak and frail, a sort of damsel in distress and Edward Cullen is her rescuer.

There’s more to it than that. The main problem is that Twilight advances the absolutely horrible idea that a dangerous man can somehow be a danger to everyone EXCEPT the woman he loves. Real life doesn’t work that way. And yet this myth has persisted for hundreds of years, going back at least as far as the Grimm’s Beauty and the Beast.

It’s a very irresponsible piece of fiction, but sadly one that resonates hugely with many women. I’ll agree that it’s polarizing — it appears women either love it or hate it. But a goodly number love it. I remember Caitlin Flanagan’s gushing review of it in The Atlantic a while ago, for example.

The main problem is that Twilight advances the absolutely horrible idea that a dangerous man can somehow be a danger to everyone EXCEPT the woman he loves. And yet this myth has persisted for hundreds of years, going back at least as far as the Grimm’s Beauty and the Beast.

This is a myth that is as ancient as mankind itself. In the Stone Age, women had to find a sociopath who was able to dominate the hunting group so he could give the best meat to the woman and her offspring. Women who managed to ensnare a dominant sociopathic alpha survived and we are their descendants. So women have an innate tendency to find a dangerous bad boy. Of course, you already know that.

Fictions that ressonate with this part of the female psyche are successful between women (read romance novels). Fictions that tell women to find a nice guy are boring for women and, therefore, have no commercial success.

So, in summary, it is not that Twilight and the Beauty and the Beast create this myth but the myth is already present and the success of both fictions is due to their alignment to the myth.

A society where women do not have a reason to mature is one where they are in the childish fantasy of special princesess. To quote the Fight Club:

“You are not a beautiful or unique snowflake”

And of course that is irresponsible, women NEED to be told that their vaginas CANNOT control a high testosterone thug. He will just beat her and kill her. And in her bruised face it will show her love for him.

There’s also the fact that in a non-batshit insane world, where the publishing industry isn’t female dominated, a poorly written piece of shit like Twilight would have keep rotting in FanFiction.net, without doing much damage (at least not more than other pieces of that site). Or, at least nobody would have seen “Twilight Moms”.

Since many Twilight fans were Buffy fans, consider this a shot of methadone for Twilight-addicts.

And women think I am insulting them when I say they have the mentality of a 7-10 year old boy and that they are living in fantasy land. Nope. It’s just the truth and the truth does not insult.
